Hot Take: Sheer Clothing is Impractical

May 1st

Story by: Talia Streater

It looks great on Instagram, but in real life? Where are you wearing that see-through top without feeling uncomfortable? Sheer clothing is one of those trends that thrives on Instagram and fashion runways but falls apart in real life. In a well-staged shot or on a model walking the designer runway, it appears ethereal, but in everyday situations, it’s just wildly impractical.

First of all, wearing sheer garments is a constant logistical challenge. What are you wearing underneath? A bralette? A tank top with full coverage? A bodysuit with lace details? In any case, you're stuck attempting to find that elusive balance between feeling under the sun and looking purposeful. Let’s face it, most people don't feel comfortable walking around with their entire torso exposed to the public. Then there's the question of whether or not sheer clothing is appropriate, and it isn't for most real-life settings, unless you're at a beach club, fashion show, or music festival.

Even the aesthetic appeal is questionable. When styled perfectly, sheer clothing can look edgy and fashion-forward. But when done wrong, it can just look sloppy or like you forgot to put on an actual outfit. There’s a fine line between "high fashion" and "I just walked out in my lingerie."

sheer clothing is heavily dependent on confidence. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, worried about flashing too much skin, or layering so much that the sheer element becomes pointless, what’s the actual benefit? In most cases, it’s more trouble than it’s worth.
